Draft proofing
Do your curtains move in a strong wind when the curtains are closed? Have you noticed that you need to turn the boiler up on windy days? If you can answwer yes to either of these, then you could probably benifit from some draft proofing.
Draft proofing is a very cheap way of helping to keep your house warm, but there are a few simple rules you should follow:
- Draftproof around doors, windows and letterboxes
- Don't fully draft proof rooms containing Gas heaters or open fires. Any source of flame needs oxygen.
- Bathrooms should have adaquete ventilation too. Don't fully draft proof bathrooms unless they have fixed vents
- Any existing vents should not be blocked up. They are usually there for a purpose!
- Watch out for condensation and damp. By restricting the flow of air around your home, you may find this to be more of a problem. Call in an expert if you're in any doubt.
How much could I Save?
Typically 20% of all heat loss is from ventilation and drafts. By halving this, you could save about
£45 a year on an average heating bill of £450.
How much will it cost me?
Typically, a trip to the DIY store for a few bits of draft proofing strip could cost
less than £50.
